What is a Public Hospital District?

A public hospital district is like a school district or a fire district. People in a community create these districts to make sure important services are available. They help pay for them through a levy, which is money taken from their property taxes.

The San Juan County Public Hospital District is a junior taxing district of San Juan County, Washington, serving the Town of Friday Harbor, San Juan Island, and the islands of Brown, Pearl, Henry, Spieden, Stuart, Johns, and some smaller islands*.

The District levies two separate property taxes to provide distinct health care services:

One levy helps to fund San Juan Island EMS which provides 9-1-1 advanced life support emergency medical response and critical care transport for ground and marine services. All of the funds from this levy support San Juan Island EMS.

The second levy helps fund Village at the Harbor and Village at Home. It also contains a subsidy to PeaceHealth to offset the costs of healthcare services within the District for charitable healthcare services, emergency department services, and the provision of physician services provided through Peace Island Medical Center to the residents of the District.
